Decanter has a conical bowl and internal rotating scroll conveyor propel solids or bleach them along the inclined wall of bowl to then bedischarged.
Solids and liquids are discharged continuously in decanter. Decanter can process coarse particle that would blind the discharge system and disc of bowl machines.
In simple words decanter has high capacity but effidency is less when compared to disk stack centrifuge (Separator).
Decanters are used in wide range of application where the ability to achieve both good clarity and low moisture in the discharge solids is appreciated. They are versatile as they can handle both large and small particles as well as a wide variety of solids consantration.
The Scroll Rotates slower than the bowl at a diffrential speed of 1/20 to 1/160 of the bowl speed, this differential speed causes translation of the solids along the bowl.
Particularly, soft solids can be conveyed with low conveyor differential speed, higher differential speeds case resuspensions. The units will have a force up to 6000 and range in diameter form 6" to 48". The solid discharge oudet is usually smaller than the liquid discharge oudet size(Ring Dam) the pool level or depth of the pond can be controlled. Lower the level, greater the length of the dry section.

1. Feed
The feed suspension is introduced through an inlet tube to the feed zone of the conveyor where it is accelerated and directed into the interior of the bowl.
The solids which must have a higher specific gravity than the liquid settle out at the inner wall of the bowl almost instantaneously due to the high centrifugal acceleration normally in range of 2000 - 4000 g -leaving a clear inner ring of liquid.
2. Solids Discharge
The Settled solids are conveyed axially towards the small end of the bowl by means of the screw conveyor, which rotates at a slightly different speed than the bowl. On the way to discharge ports the solids are lifted out of the pond up along the dry beach. On the beach liquid drains off and flows back into the pond provided that the solids phase consists of discrete particles. Where liquid cannot drain through the solids phase, dryness of the solids is obtained by compacting (squeezing) the solids both on the wet and on the dry beach. The solids are finally discharged from the bowl through the discharge port into the collecting chamber of the casing that surrounds the bowl. From there the solids are removed by gravity through the outlet funnel.
